Skin Deep: Sam Hain and Dermot

Description

SO. My buddy *booker has this webcomic thingummy called Skin Deep, that's all about monsters and mythology and music and snazzy things like that. AS WE'RE BUDS AND ALL, I've gone and created a few supporting cast members for her comic in my free time (only fair, as she's given me a couple for Team D.U.D.E.). Why have you lot never seen them before? Simple: Furries Ruin Everything. I haven't been comfortable with drawing and sharing anthropomorphic characters in the open for ages now because of furries, so while I've drawn these characters for Kory many times over a lengthy period of time, I've never really shared any.

But my other friend *ladydragona went and did this neat series of her own characters-for-Skin-Deep, and I was inspired to come out of my shell and share a few of my own. THANKS SFE.

So hopefully, I'll be posting a bunch of quick little portraits and drawings of the mythological-based characters I've made for Kory's comic, and all in a relatively short period of time. LET'S SEE HOW MANY I CAN DO.

I love monstery people.

NAME: Samuel H. Ainesborough, Dermot Aaron Ainesborough
AGE: 19, 17
INFO: Samuel and Dermot are brothers, hailing from Ireland, with an Inverted Gryphon father. An Inverted Gryphon is basically what the name says: a gryphon that instead of being an eagle front with lion hindquarters, is a lion with eagle hindquarters. They lay eggs that hatch into cubs, and most of the other gryphon species think they're pretty ridiculous. They themselves think they're pretty rad, though. And that's what counts!

They have a mythical father and a human mother, and a baby sister named Bree. Dermot and Bree and their father are standard mythical monsters, but Sam has a bit of a problem: the medallion his father got him for his "Turning" was broken and had lost most of its magic somehow, and wouldn't transform him into his true shapes. And since you're pretty much stuck with the medallion you're given, Samuel's stuck in his human form for the foreseeable future. Naturally Sam is very pissed off about this, and Dermot explaining it as "Sam's broken" doesn't help.

To make up for this, Samuel decided he wanted to become a sorcerer, nicknamed himself "Sam Hain" and started studying magic. Magic in Skin Deep is pretty volatile so this is a dangerous plan, but Sam's resolute about being special in some fashion. Leaving their family in Ireland, the brothers head to the L.A. for the cultural scene that's going down there, and because Sam heard there was a grown-up sorceror there and wanted to apprentice with him. They rent a small flat near the L.A., and earn a living by busboying at the Nightclub and waiting tables at the cafe Greensleeves respectively.

As you can probably guess from the scratchings above, Sam's a bit of a moody, emo bag of grump (who won't stop dying his hair) and Dermot's a lot more cheerful and playful. There's sort of an endless circle of Dermot making fun of Sam Hain, Sam Hain trying to curse or jinx Dermot, and Dermot making fun of Sam again. Aw, brothers. They're a couple of my favorites.

I actually looked at a picture of an eagle when drawing Dermot's legs. Holy god, those are big claws. And hairy (feathery) legs.

TO REITERATE, I LIKE MONSTERY CHARACTERS.

Characters illustrated belong both to me and *booker. It's her comic after all, haha.

I would say: "Oh creepy, Samuel H. has the same first name and middle initial as me," but then I realize my name is pretty common, so. . .

Anyway, I like your characters! I hope someday Sam Hain grows out of his inferiority complex and becomes a brilliant sorcerer! And I hope his brother stops teasing him---oh who am I kidding, no I don't, it's so much more interesting with brotherly teasing!

(And just ignore the furries. The category is just like everything else, there are some oddballs and bullies, but most are nice and just wonder what it would be like to be an animal.)
