One of the rarest heraldic animals, the Alphyn is a wolf with the foreclaws of a dragon, a knotted tail, and a very long tongue.

Of course, as with most medieval monsters, there's a zillion variations. Sometimes it's a maned lion-type critter with big pointy wolf ears! Sometimes it has the foreclaws of an eagle! Sometimes it has goat hooves, either up front or on all four legs! Medieval people would be terrible at identifying a police lineup!

MAN, HERALDIC BEASTS, ARE YOU GREAT OR WHAT I remember in Germany whenever a plaque had to describe a heraldic beast they would just shove all the beats it MAY HAVE BEEN into one word and called it even. OH MYTHOLOGY. Seriously though, dude, you could do a whole series of this and it would be awesome.
